Old Fashioned Cocktail

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest known cocktails, dating back to the early 1800s. Originally called the “Whiskey Cocktail,” it was a simple mix of whiskey, sugar, water, and bitters.

Over time, bartenders added fruit and other embellishments, but the modern “Old Fashioned” remains true to its original minimalist roots.

It became especially popular in the mid-20th century and saw a resurgence due to its association with Mad Men and the craft cocktail movement.

Flavor Profile

The Old Fashioned is a bold, spirit-forward cocktail with a smooth, slightly sweet, and aromatic profile. Bourbon provides a rich, caramel-like sweetness, while rye whiskey gives it a spicier, drier edge.

Angostura bitters add depth with warm spice notes, and the sugar balances the flavors. The orange peel contributes a subtle citrus aroma, enhancing the overall complexity of the drink.

Excellent Pairings

  • Cocktails: Pairs well with other classic whiskey drinks like the Manhattan, Boulevardier, and Sazerac, offering a refined tasting experience.
  • Appetizers: Complements charcuterie boards, smoked almonds, or bacon-wrapped dates, enhancing the whiskey’s smoky and sweet notes.
  • Main Dishes: Best with grilled ribeye steak, smoked brisket, or bourbon-glazed pork chops, as the cocktail’s richness matches the deep umami flavors.
  • Desserts: Works well with dark chocolate truffles, pecan pie, or bread pudding, balancing the sweetness with its warm, spiced undertones.
